Generally there is just silly money in football at all levels these days. Down at Thurlow Nunn league there will be lads on a couple hundred or more per game. Might even be similar amounts going around the Anglian Comb for the right player.
In 2014/2015 season the average wage in League 2 was only £40k a year, so £769 a week.... and that average would have been brought up significantly by Portsmouth and Plymouth. Portsmouth still had Nicky Shorey on £8k a week, so would be plenty earning bog standard wages of £400 or £500 a week.

Wouldn't surprise me at all if Jamar Loza is playing for Maidstone United because they are paying him more per week in the Conference National with their gate receipts (about 2500 people per game) than he was offered to play in the league. Average in the Conference National around £500 a week, so easy to imagine Loza as an attacking player might be on £800 or £1k a week for non-league..

Conference National average of £500 is skewed by a handful of clubs who remain full time professional, and the cannon fodder tinpot teams at the bottom.

In 2014 the average wage at Accrington in League 2 was £400 a week (Average attendance under 1500). A lot of players at that level must get annoyed by people always assuming they are minted when they are earning less than a teacher or police officer.

Add to that the typical one year deals and all the moving about... worrying about being on the dole every summer, hardly living the dream...more like clinging on to a dream and hoping they get noticed by somebody up the pyramid! Probably hard for a lot of them to get a mortgage.

Looking a bit lightweight and slow, again. Wonder if one of Vrancic, Wes or even Maddison could have been left out for Yanic.

I'd agree with that, feel we always need at least one of Yanic or Murphy to start just to have a bit of pace, particularly away from home on the break

Watkins unlucky then.

As per above, Murphy probably needs dropping but Wildschut can feel hard done by to not be getting more starts I think.

Won't be popular but thought we played quite well. There's obvious flaws but it was considerably better than Barnsley at home.

Thought Vrancic had a better game starting off deeper. That opinions definitely won't go down well with some, not really on here but in other locations.

I've tried but I don't get the Oliveira love in. You'd back him over Jerome in a one on one with the goalkeeper but he must have just as, if not worse strike rate. Looks like he's fighting for the ball but rarely comes out with it. Shoots from pointless angles etc on his weak foot. Did he get a shot on target today? He had a couple in the penalty area which were also wide. Don't get me wrong, we don't have anyone better but he's not irreplaceable.

Agree with that. Despite the result, a lot better than Saturday.

Doesn't take much. Saturday was pretty awful.

I didn't follow the game tonight apart from just catching the last couple of minutes on the radio and heard Hucks saying stuff about not looking like scoring and nobody taking it by the scruff of the neck (that ol' cliché).

Daniel could do with a win on Saturday. The fact he's Webber's man might help him but we all know the way football is these days. He won't last much longer at this rate.

The problem as I see it is that if you're going to play conservative football and not get men forward in numbers, then you ideally need to be a counter attacking side and we simply aren't one of those and haven't signed the type of players to play that way....  Hoolahan and Vrancic don't have any pace, Maddison isn't really that type of player either, Pinto is but our left back options aren't quick on the overlap. It was a similar problem under Hughton, 10 men behind the ball and then relying on Snodgrass to carry the ball up field.... and whilst good at ball retention he was hardly Darren Eadie when it came to travelling with the ball.

Also what are these long diagonal balls from the centre backs about? We've been playing those all season but they never seem to amount to anything other than a goal kick to the opposition or their full backs mopping up, its almost as if its what you would do if you had a wide target man (remember that silly system Neil Adams tried to introduce with Lafferty?).

I'm not going to have a meltdown, I just think we've got a mid-table squad and that's why we're failing to beat some mid-table teams. I'd probably rather wait to see if Farke and Webber can achieve whatever their vision is in the next few windows than sign some British manager who has been around the block and would end up introducing a system which would bypass Maddison and see Hoolahan discarded in his final season. Unless of course the Plan B was Paul Lambert, I'd go on a bender to celebrate the return of the messiah.

I'm just accepting we are a mid-table side at the moment, due to both bad luck with injuries and budget limitations which were partially caused by McNally's final six months. Options at moment seem to be accepting the reality of our situation or having a meltdown, I'll choose the former.

Feels a little bit to me like DF is trying to prove a point which is to the detriment of the team.

Ps.... People on the Pink'un calling for Webber and Farke to go are idiots. If anything because we've just spent millions paying people off, where's the money coming from to make a dozen people redundant again? We can't afford to have another overhaul.

I'll call for Farke's sacking if we get pulled into a relegation battle, or if we don't get off to a flying start in the 2018/19 season when we should be seeing the fruits of all this change and with 2 more transfer windows under our belts. If Webber doesn't make us competitive next season despite a huge decrease in revenue then basically he has failed in his remit.

Its tough to build a side when your budget is shrinking, ask Paul Lambert how he found it at Villa.

We're relying on the likes of Godfrey, Lewis, Morris, Matthews, Thompson to come into the squad next season. Although Vrancic is a bit of a black mark for me, I'm one of those who doesn't see what it is he is supposed to offer I'm afraid.

If it doesn't get better this season it'll only be worse next season.

Ruddy, Bennett, Bassong, Mulumbu and co wouldn't have accepted 1 year deals, and you can't give 3 year deals to players on their money when you are 1 year away from parachute payments ending. We had no option but to overhaul.

It may get worse before it gets better, but Godfrey, Thompson, Lewis, Matthews, Morris etc will come into the squad.

Being stuck with Naismith, Jarvis, McGovern is going to cripple us next season, we've got no choice but to use kids... they are cheap. So perhaps next season will be our 'bottom' before we can release expensive deadwood and lets hope if it is bad then it isn't too bad (e.g. relegation).

I don't envy Webber's job.

Or Farke's actually.

It make take a minor miracle for them to get us into the top 6 next season, but that has to be their objective.

Alan Irvine is the first sensible suggestion I've seen on the Pink'un, cheap and willing to be a 'head coach' so won't need a complete system redesign and mass-redundancies again... Lambert would not work as a head coach, he wants full control which is why he walked out of Wolves. Pulis would want huge wages and some sort of budget, etc etc.

But a new manager may get more out of some players, like Jerome, but simultaneously get less out of others like Trybull and Zimmermann? I think we should persevere for now, personally and see what results are like when Tettey and Trybull are both fit and Pritchard is back.

We looked at our best when Tettey and Trybull were playing together, which I guess is why we are now linked to Morsy (so we aren't left with 1 defensive midfielder again). I'm hoping that if we can get Pritchard match fit then he'll add another dimension to our play in the final third and possibly create better chances for Jerome and Oliviera. The former hasn't had the type of service he requires and the latter is resorting to pot shots.

Can't see Irvine coming away from West Ham after he was overlooked here.

Don't be so sure about Lambert wanting full control.

Lambert wanted to decide who Wolves signed, so was completely incompatible with Mendes.

Lambert's ability to speak German should be noted perhaps! That's one British manager who Zimmermann and Trybull could respect, particularly the former who will know full well that he's a Dortmund legend.

They just need to get results pretty quick. Patience will wear very thin - not only among the fans but also among the players. Cos that's the football world we live in.

As yet Webber and Farke haven't proven anything. Webber has got rid of the expensive players which were easy to get rid of and signed some cheap replacements. Farke got the defence into a decent place but has killed off the goal threat.

Whether people want to have goodwill towards them or not that is the reality of where it is.

I would quite like the idea of Lambert managing Sean Raggett and Carlton Morris though, Raggett is a warrior and Morris in the Holt mould. Hoolahan perhaps accept another year on the cheap to play with the Messiah.
