Nah, worst case scenario is that we loan him out for the rest of his contract and he goes on a free.

According to the mirror he could be on his way back to sporting lisbon, it is the mirror though so i'd take that with a grain of salt

I think AN should assess him and see what he thinks, give him a fresh start - although he will probably be off

There would be some logic to him returning to Sporting - he was an effective player for them and popular with the fans. And they'd surely get him at a knock-down price.

Still, that article says he got 9 goals in 36 games for St Etienne. If thats accurate I think that would be an acceptable return in the Premiership for us

There's a big difference though between Ligue 1 and the Premier League. The mid-table teams in Ligue 1 are probably the equivalent of the top teams in the Championship. St Etienne are one of the best teams in that league, they ended up finishing 5th, yet their best player Max Gradel (who scored 17 goals from the wing last season for them) is being linked with a £5m move to Watford and Bournemouth, 2 of the weakest teams in the Premier League, which says a lot.

Plus I think that it was 9 goals in all competitions for St Etienne. Only 5 of those were in the league. I think to be honest our best option is to try and sell him and get maybe £3/4m of our money back. Neil will undoubtedly want to have a look at him though.

Sporting Lisbon have today signed Costa Rica forward Bryan Ruiz from Fulham, according to BBC Sport

Does this mean the proposed move for RvW is off?

Ruiz is more of an attacking midfielder - wouldnt think it would affect RvW where I think its all down to personal terms.

Reports that the deal with Sporting has collapsed. He may stay after all.

Portuguese reporting RvW will take a 25% pay cut but Lisbon dont want to pay that much - so it seems he has significantly adjusted his pay expectations;   just leaves the question of how much difference is between the two.    Not many people accept a pay cut that large and he would hardly be blamed if he chose to stay here and take the cash;  we offered him that 4 year contract after all.

It must be worth our while helping to fund some of the gap to get some effing closure on this saga?!?!

“Ricky is a Norwich player and he will get as much opportunity as anyone else,” he said. “He scored a good goal and then created the second so as far as I am concerned he has had a good night. He is just a wee bit lacking in terms of fitness because he came back slightly later than the other guys. I just made sure he didn’t pick up any injuries which was why he played 58 minutes instead of 60.

Time will tell what happens from here. I have had a good chat with Ricky and as far as I am concerned everything that has gone past, as it had done with the likes of Seb (Bassong),has now gone past. It is irrelevant what other people think of him. All he needs to worry about is what I think of him.”

This sounds more consistent with what we know about Alex Neil   :)

I hope we wouldnt consider such a drastic solution. Becchio is one thing, RvW quite another
Could we sign him on a one year deal? He may be a loose cannon but he was scoring for Inter Milan last season and was a £12.8m just two years ago!

Cant see him fitting in with the Alex Neil way, especially as it seems he took a dislike to Liver-y

“I thought his movement off the front was good,” said the Norwich boss.

“I don’t think he is ever going to be a big, strapping centre forward who is going to bash people about, however, if we can get the ball around the middle of the park the one thing he is good at is running off defenders’ shoulders and creating angles and creating space for himself.

“He was unfortunate in the game, he had two or three opportunities when he could have scored, particularly the one he ran through and had the goalkeeper to beat. I thought he worked extremely hard and the biggest thing for strikers is you want to make sure they get opportunities.

“It is important you have variety to choose from. Not just the strikers but you look at Vadis (Odjidja) and Tony Andreu as well and perhaps people haven’t seen a lot of them. It is vital to let people see what they are capable of and certainly in the first half or even 60 minutes they both equipped themselves well.”

Recent comments from Alex Neil. Emboldened comment is interesting - intentional slight? Slip of the tongue? An unnecessary and unintentional use of the word 'the' making a compliment accidentally singular and not worth reading into?

It certainly sounds like although he has misgivings, he's going to see if he can use him

I don't think he literally means that RvW is only good at one thing. It's the sort of phrase you slip seamlessly into sentences without even realising. I agree with what he says, his movement was superb, but ultimately if you can't take the chances then it's pointless.

If thats down to confidence or just needs some coaching then its promising. If he's getting into goalscoring positions that half the job. If the other half can be worked on then he could come good

I think it's hard to tell right now. If he's still here in a month's time after the transfer window has shut then we can probably presume Alex Neil has plans for him. He's on too much money to simply use as back-up.
