Mate we're second in the league...

Obviously Hayden being injured doesn't sound like good business, but they didn't expect Giannoulis, Sorensen et al to be injured so early in the season. A lack of DMs is a problem (always preferred AirWear myself ... sorry) but with fit LBs the role of DM could have been covered by others. A 'reliable source' told me that they did try to get Jamal Lewis on loan but a) they couldn't afford his wages and b) he wasn't interested in playing in the EFL. I am quietly encouraged by the performances this season. It's been a bit hit and miss but 4 wins on the trot and 2nd in the table is a good place to be. Last season's disasters appear to be slowly getting sorted by Smith and my reservations about him are fading with each match. His use of the squad has been good and his tactical substitutions have been effective (something DF was not too good at).
I'm hoping that we're going to be able to get out of this league, it just seems totally unprofessional the way we continue to use transfer windows and start the season, whichever league we're in.

In what way 'unprofessional'? We are not the only team to do little business during the transfer window and other teams have started poorly, most noticeably Liverpool and Manchester United in the PL. I think this transfer window has been OK. We've brought in Nunez, Sara and Ramsey who are decent players. Nunez looks to be an especially good acquisition. Hayden's injury is disappointing but when he does get fit he should do a decent job for us. Previous transfer windows have been OK apart from last season. Rashica is not as good as we all initially thought he was, PLM was a good signing but was never given a chance to show how good he was until the last few games, Tszolis was a disaster but some of that was Farke's fault by publicly slamming him and that must have affected his confidence. Sargent is proving that in his correct position he is a pain in the arse for EFL defences (and I will brag that all last season I predicted he would be a good long-term signing).

You've covered lots of points there, I'll go one or two at a time.

I used the term unprofessional because we weren't ready for the start of the season, the first few games were embarrassing.
Now we're eight games in and still have new signings who are not fit to play. We had enough injured players in the squad without buying more.

Last season we binned the first group of games and it seems we had a similar attitude this year. Do we really think that we're going to be so far ahead of the league that we can throw games away at the start of the season?
The context to this is that we were one of the first few clubs in the country to know which division we'd be in come the new season. We had more time than anyone else to prepare and get our business done.

Regarding the new players, I tend to see a players career history and think that's a guide as to how they're going to play for us.
Pukki was a huge exception to that rule, but generally people don't change too much, what you see is what you get.

Sara and Nunez don't have a prolific record of assisting or scoring goals.
They both seemed to be good at running with the ball and much like Onel not always having end product.

Nunez has seemed very bright and has shown some lovely skill in tight corners & some good passes into the forward players.
Hopefully he'll keep it up and even improve as he settles in the team & country over the coming weeks & months.

Can't comment much on Sara because he's not up to minutes yet.

Ramsey has been quite interesting and is far better than I thought he would be. Sounds like Smith and Shakey have a good relationship with him, hopefully he'll get even better as the games go by.

Rash had a reputation for being alot better than he's shown playing for us, I suspect he was the one talked about as needing to settle down now the transfer window is closed.

PLM meh

Tzolis, another mismanagement situation I believe, see Ricky Van W.

Josh I've mentioned before that I'm not convinced he's going to score goals regularly over the season just because he doesn't have any record of scoring or assisting during his career (we've already used the exception to that rule with Teemu)
I'm very happy where he's at now but I can't unsee his incredibly poor first touches etc. sometimes I wonder if he's seen a ball before.
Let's hope he has the season of his life and gets 30 goals so your prediction comes true.

Idah was starting to look good and find his feet before his injury, I think he's the one who we'll be cheering by the end of the season and in the Premier League next.

Andy O, give him a long term contract based on performance markers to keep his standards high, one of our best players for years to come.

Hayden has a history of Championship & Premier League, quite an interesting signing. This says a Smith signing to me rather than Webber. Unfortunately, he is the only DM so as he's injured we just wave teams through our midfield unchallenged.
If we're serious about getting promoted we badly need two DM's to cover for injuries and suspensions, we haven't learned from Normann's injuries last year.

Interesting information about the transfer window in Bailey's piece on the Athletic.
It can't be copied or shared I'm afraid because of the paywall.
He details the budget we had, which players could have gone but didn't get offers, which players might have came in and also specific reasons why stories were leaked to the press about enquiries to take Max on loan
Very informative read.

I agree about these two. Idah has what it takes to be a really good striker. Andy O is first class, he can reach the very top, it's a shame that we will probably lose him sometime over the next year or so.

Hopefully not!! Get him on a long contract with a large buyout clause.

Haha, Duncan and my mate Gravy Kev messaged me about that. Not ideal news for the forum, as let's face it, the concept of forums has been slowly dying for a long time.

I see Kev asked if he would lift my ban before he goes. Nah, you're alright thanks :D

I think Archant are in financial trouble, and have been making redundancies. I guess if the forum still has the footfall that makes the advertising pay, then it will just carry on as is. If it isn't however...

Archant being taken over by some multi, not sure if they're still going to be Archant or in this area.

I have a friend who got dumped by Archant last year. She told me that it was the football news et al that was keeping them afloat, but only just. If Archant do go under I will have sympathy for the people who may lose jobs, but Archant have been treating staff like s--t and ruining the EDP and EEN for years so they will be no great loss.
