Are our defenders really thick? Years ago, before subs, I played a fairly high standard of football, as a line hugging winger. One of our fullbacks went off injured, coach said to me, no point playing on the wing, we are a man down, see what you can do as a fullback, heed my advice, if in danger or in doubt, kick the bloody ball out. I never played on the wing again, I had almost 10 years playing right or left fullback and did a pretty good job of it, never forgetting his advice

I don’t think the players are thick, but you did as your manager asked and it was good advice.
The players are simply doing the same and following the managers instructions (if they didn’t they’d likely be dropped) but the advice they’ve been given is what is causing us problems.
You can’t expect 2nd tier defenders to be pinging passes around like Iniesta

Yep. It's like we HAVE to be behind before we show the play we are capable of. Last night was an example. We become attacking and try stuff more. Not that we haven't been fantastic in short spells throughout the season because we have.
Still think there's something there to be hopeful about but the whole project is testing our patience...and makes fans question a lot.
With players the calibre of Sainz, Sarge and Nunez in this league though I think you could expect some fine attacking spells whoever was the manager. The trick is to still utilise those players skills when you have the ball while making yourself much harder to break down without it, as this is the difference between mid table mediocrity and finishing around the playoffs.
We’ve definitely seen a different style of football to the organised chaos favoured by Wagner, but I’m not entirely convinced it’s any more effective or would be even in the event of promotion which must surely be the point of any “project” that the management group keep banging on about
