Thinking about everything, History (recent and not so recent),fans, players, trophies etc. Who would you consider a similar club to us?

Obviously things get distorted when rich businessmen get involved at seemingly smaller clubs or when big clubs enter financial problems but a names i'd throw out there are:

1) Cardiff - the reason I came up with this thread. They are a one club city (slightly bigger than Norwich and more or less as remote),they have had recent flirtation with the premiership and did well in a couple of cups recently. Vincent Tan creates a slightly strange picture as does their recent financial woes but the two almost cancel each other out.

2) Leicester - Their spell in the thousands was a bit similar to ours in the 90's. They are now enjoying the fruits of investment but seem to hover around a similar level as us and seem to often be linked with the same players as us especially when we're in the same league.

3) Wolves - They seem to have gone through what we went through 5 years ago and despite it not being the most convincing win versus us, they look more likely to challenge the top end of the table this time round. Their stadium is a bit better than our now but they get similar catchment and fan base and in all likelihood we'll forever overtake/ be overtaken by them until one of us does something catastrophically bad and folds!

Wouldn't say Wolves the have had a much richer history winning leagues and FA cup, maybe in recent times same fate.

I would say Southampton from a size of club, support and history.

I've often wondered this too, Jimmy.  Imo there are very few clubs like us.  It's to do with being part of the character of where Norfolk is and it's fanbase.  Over 100 miles from a similar sized club as in London or the Midlands.   At one time Ipswich would have been considered similar, but they have diminished beyond recognition.    That distance and the rural nature of Norfolk means that we retain a character that is different to almost any other club except those that are in similarly rural areas - but most of them are lower league than us. Cardiff to me are not remote in terms of population being in a region of large towns and built up areas. Plymouth come to mind as being a city in a largely rural area.   But they are way below us in available resources as well as being lower league.  Carlisle is also a city in a rural area - and they've been in the top flight -  but there is a small club mentality there and again, resources are way lower than ours.  Agree with Paul that Southampton are similar in some  ways and they have Portsmouth as their "Ipswich" too.

I've always considered Southampton to be similar to us. I used to think Coventry were too but they've gone right down the swanny these last few years.

I think Southampton will be an unanimous pick, mainly due to our parallel promotions and relegations. Bristol city used to be very similar, but have drifted down the scale. Notts Forest and Leicester are now closer too us.

Is a difficult question because people bring 'history' into the argument.

In terms of fan base and ground capacity, etc, we were very close to Stoke in the Premier League and Derby in this league.

But supporters of either club wouldn't be able to accept that, because they would hark back to a time in the past when they were considered bigger (60's and 70's).

Case in point Hull City

They are now pinching our best players (arguably),have a newer (but slightly smaller) stadium, european football and the premiership. Not long ago they were in league 2 nearly getting relegated, same with Swansea. Where do those two come into it? Are they bigger or smaller? They are both 1 club cities as well.

Also case in point - Leeds United.

Who would have thought thought that a club that made a Champions League semi-final 13 years ago would now be our feeder club.  Are they now below or above us? History says yes, but recent stature and transfers probably says no.

It's quite a subjective question, and a pretty interesting one.

Is that where Roy Race started before moving to Melchester Rovers?

I've always considered Bolton to be of similar size to Norwich, along with Southampton and Coventry.

I guess the varying degree of success Southampton are showing compared to Coventry shows the difference in having a competent board and owners running the club.

If memory serves, we've played QPR, Saints and Palace each a zillion times over the years, suggesting we've been in the same division as them rather often - we're probably about the same as them.
