Me and the better half are planning a holiday to the US in 2016, and I was just wondering (whether you've been before, or whether you live there),where do you like and where would you recommend?

Been to New York and absolutely loved it. Plenty to see, great atmosphere, great places to eat, if you're a big sports fan, there are plenty of teams to go and see. Price wasn't too bad at all, I stayed in Manhattan for 10 days and it cost me just over £1,000 for flights and hotel, which I thought was good.

Its a massive country and very diverse. Where to go depends on what you like.

* As mentioned above, New York is amazing. I can't put my finger on it, it just has an amazing vibe.

* California is OK. I hate LA, but San Diego & San Fran are great cities.

* A little off track, but the rockies in Colarado, Wyoming, Utah & Montana are just stunning if you're into those sites. (Just be aware that the people there - while very friendly and actually quite lovely - love 4 things. Jesus, Guns, Country Music & country Music about Jesus and/or guns).

* I love Vegas. It's the best and worst of the USA in one little strip. Just don't spend anymore than a weekend there, or your liver & wallet will suffer. (it's also convenaint to The Grand Canyan)

Just a few suggestions from my travels, but I've never been to Florida or, well, most of the country. I'm sure others have other ideas.

Cheers guys, this is what I'm looking for. I'm well aware that nobody will have the low down on the entire country  :p

The hotel I stayed at was called "The Pod". There are two in New York, and I imagine both are very similar,

New York, San Francisco, and Las Vegas are all placed I've been and would love to see again.

I've also been to Orlando and Chicago, those are ticked off the list but not particular bothered about seeing those again.

It really does depend on what you are looking for in a holiday.

If you want to experience city life, see some historical sites, and watch some sports, then New York, Boston, Chicago, LA, and San Francisco are all good choices.

If you want something besides the huge, typical tourist destinations but still a big city, New Orleans, Atlanta, Seattle, or Austin would be a good place to go.

If you want a nature trip, anywhere in the Rockies are good as well as North and South Carolina.

Denver and San Francisco are good for all of the above really.  Both have sports teams close to year round.  They are short drives to nature places (the Rockies and Muir Woods.  Redwood National Forest is about a 5 hour drive from San Fran if you are up for a bit longer of a drive.)

Florida is good for Disney, NASA, and the beach, but depending on when you go could be really crowded.

Anyway, I could go on seeing as I live in the United States.  It really is quite diverse here, so once you have a slight idea just say so and this huge list can be shrunk.

You do really have to do New York, it won't disappoint. I've also done Boston, Atlanta, Denver, Colorado Springs, Memphis and a place called Alamogordo which is small town USA in New Mexico.

Getting into this a little late, but...

Lot of good cities mentioned, as well as some I would have no interest in whatsoever... but I do agree with Ghost of Theo and flashdown in that it depends on what you like. Shilling some more for Texas towns... As much as it pains me to say it as an OU Sooner alumnus, but Austin can be an absolute blast, especially if you're there for SXSW (March 13-22, 2015).  The Texas Hill Country *would* be nice if it had seen some rain the last three years, but right now it's rivers and lakes are pretty barren.  San Antonio is just down the road from there and Padre and South Padre are close as well if you like the beach.  Dallas flat out sucks.  All it has is shopping and if you're coming across the pond for that you're best off visiting the Tier 1 cities previously mentioned.  Fort Worth, where I am, is kind of a secret.  We've got the Stockyards with Billy Bob's and the daily cattle drives, but we also have several serious art museums west of downtown in the Cultural District (where I happen to work).  The Modern, The Kimball, and the Amon Carter are solid.

Plus our BBQ and Tex-Mex are to die for...

Boston, good mix of modern and history. Go to Salem, Plymouth, Cape Cod...etc

San Francisco as said above excellent. Drive the coast road from SF to LA and see Carmel and Monterrey.

Been to Honolulu a couple of times. More touristy but worth a visit, but the big Island and Maui are nice.

Try to do a sports event when you're there, it's good fun whatever the sport, although I'm biased towards baseball in a big way to the point I'm planning to go back to Boston next year purely to see the Redsox :)

I had an amazing time in Georgia. - a weekend in Atlanta followed by some lovely little towns and seriously luxurious hotels - at ridiculous prices compared to the UK, if a little luxury is what Mrs Splutcho has in mind?

If a city is the thing then San Francisco is just unbelievable.

But the advice above is good - the US is huge, diverse and if you have time then try to combine different types of holiday in different areas - New York is awesome, Boston lovely and great for a history geek like me.

One other thing springs to mind - internal flights in the US are (or at least certainly were when I was there!) really good value and allow you to hop around the country to make the most of your time there.

As you can guess I am sure I absolutely love it there and you have just prompted me to dig out the internet and look for our next trip!

I haven't travelled much locally outside of Boston other than using the train down to New York. I think you can get the ferry from Boston to Cape Cod though as a suggestion. I used the regional train to NY, theres a quicker train that most tourists use but I prefer to mingle with the locals. If you look on the Amtrak website it shows you routes from Boston to the sort of places you're looking at.

From what I've heard about Greyhound busses I would avoid them , I'm sure others on here wil have some input on that.
