We are committed by our contract with him to pay stipulated wages. He is committed to play for us if selected. Currently "his head is not right", and so he languishes in some sort of isolation.
He could decide that he will enjoy the payments for the rest of his contract and, I seem to remember, for a few weeks afterwards. It would effectively kill his career in the UK, but he could find a willing employer, or he could, decide as a free agent to go elsewhere. We could try to loan him him somewhere, but this requires his agreement.
His earnings are not inconsiderable, and we would clearly like him to move on. Is there anything we could do?
I have no idea what his relationship with the manager and staff is like. Perhaps it is cordial and he is merely sulking or perhaps he has some psychological problem, but the staff seem to be very concerned to get him to do something. As he must be one of our best paid players, surely they must try something further?

- We could seek to discover what his grievance is and seek to address it.This must surely have been tried.
- We could select him for every conceivable development game, or lower if possible, to shame him. This has happened to some extent. How far could we push it?
- We could simply ignore him, expel him from training, and regard him as an expensive "pensioner", writing off any value in him.
