Would be disappointed if this was a Championship game because, although Gunn kept us in it, to concede a goal that late was a bit harsh. It was written in the stars that Todd would miss his penalty, especially after his overly casual walk to the spot.

Ratings ...

Gunn 9 - MOTM - kept us in th game with several excellent saves - I think he deserves a run in the team
Byram 5 - solid performance as usual
Tomkinson 5 - showed some decent touches and awareness of what was going on around him
Gibson 4 - never comfortable with the ball and some of his positioning was woeful
Springett 5 - generally ok but lost the ball quite often
Sara 8 - classy performance in which he showed the quality that he will bring to the team when fully fit
Cantwell 6 - huffed and puffed and got stuck in but appeared to be trying to hard to impress his old team mates
Ramsey 5 - did what he had to do and did it satisfactorily
Rashica 4 - once again flattered to deceive and looked bored when not active in the game
Hugill 7 - took his goal well and caused their defence some problems with his aggression
subs
Aarons 6 - typical Max performance in which he showed he is a class act but appeared hesitant when in good crossing positions
Hernandez 6 - did what he could playing out of position but looked lost at times
Gibbs 7 - showed some nice touches and added a bit of pace to the midfield
Idah 8 - enthusiastic performance in which he linked well with Pukki and deserved his goal
Pukki 7 - showed some quality touches and linked well with Idah

Overall Bournemouth probably deserved to win but the match was entertaining and it was good to see that the squad does have some depth now. The loan returnees, the new signings and the youngsters all have something positive to offer. Great to see Idah back and grab a goal.

Re Hugill ... I think he does add something different in that he is big and aggressive and can finish. He is not as good as Pukki, Sargent or Idah so I wouldn't start with him but from the bench he can be very effective if we are struggling against a physically tough opposition. I think it's great that we now have some strikers who look the part in the Championship which, at the moment, is what we should focus on. After last season's disasters in every department we actually look like a decent outfit. If Smith can keep the momentum going and use his players wisely I think we have a great chance of at least a play-off finish.

I didn't see the game but I recall your observations.
He's got 3 goals at least this season including preseason, not bad for bang average, does that mean our other strikers are below average?
When he plays, you might not like the look of it, but he scores goals and goals win games.
Thems the facts.

How about we don't include pre season? Or shitty meaningless cup games?

Where do you put him in the pecking order?

Thanks for the ratings Mr. Cars. I'm assuming it's you by the style of writing, if not , I apologise to you and whoever. It's always good for us furriners to get reports and ratings, even after watching on the tellybox or the highlights

Pecking order, hmm .....

=1st Pukki - a proven goal scorer with loads of experience, not as sharp as he was but still a very good striker who links up well with Idah
=1st Sargent - always been a fan of this guy even when his confidence and form was at rock bottom, strong, athletic, fast and can finish
3rd Idah - another strong, athletic guy who, when fully fit again, can do some damage to Championship defences, links up well with Pukki
4th Hugill - a big, strong, aggressive number 9 who can finish but who lacks that little something extra that would put him higher up this list

I think Sarge looks really good when he plays the lone striker while Pukki has always seemed better with a strong partner alongside him, most recently Idah. Hugill is a real old-fashioned number 9 who can also work within a partnership, but there's just something about his overall game that doesn't convince me he is better than the other three strikers. I do like his gung-ho attitude and I reckon Smith will use him as an impact sub when he does get into the match day squad.

Not sure Mark about pecking order, just find it interesting that he seems to be in the right place at the right time to score goals, yet we've been putting alot of effort into getting Pukki scoring.

My thinking is this :-

(Assuming we get promoted)

Strikers for the Premier League next season

Hugill - probably not good enough.
Pukki - probably far too old.
Idah - possibly
Sargent - can't see him scoring goals over a season to make him a contender.

I think we should play whoever scores goals to get out of this league and at the moment it's Jordan.
In my mind, alot of teams are happy to defend deep and score on the counter against us, that doesn't help Pukki score.

Yeah good summing up, pretty much how I feel.

I'm not getting down on Hugill, but he is firmly 4th choice for me. He scored 5 Championship goals last season.

I think we will get promoted, we have a fantastic squad for this level. But there is a bigger story here, the new director is starting gently, and if we do get promoted then we will be in a position to buy a bit more quality next summer.

Strikers for the Premier league, Josh and Idah would maybe make the cut, we would release Hugill and possibly Pukki. If we did keep Pukki then he would be second choice behind a new striker.

We try every time to buy players who are just a bit too good for the Championship, hoping they will be good enough for the Prem, and it is actually a very difficult thing to do. But I do feel in Sara and Nunez we have pushed the boat out quite far for this level, and they could well be good enough.

People bemoan Webber and his recruitment, but every single season he is having to buy for two entirely different scenarios, which isn't easy.

Not entirely true Morty, past few seasons we've known quite early when we've been promoted and relegated.
This season particularly there was plenty of time from confirmation of relegation to the first game, no excuse for the team not being ready against Cardiff.

You are missing my point. We are never nailed on to stay up, we are never nailed on to be promoted. So working within our financial limitations, we are always having to mitigate risk. We can never really go balls out financially assuming we'll get promoted, and same applies in the league above, being in the yo-yo position means you have to buy players, who to some respect, suit two scenarios.

Hopefully this American bloke might change our fortunes in the PL in the future. The cook and her husband were past their sell by date years ago - no ambition!!!
