I'd be happy to see Carlos Cuellar sign. Many were sceptical when Joseph Yobo signed, but he did a good job. As with Cameron Jerome, this would be good business, IMO.

Not excited by this. All the talk around my part of the ground on Saturday was that Jerome and Cuellar were joining. Cuellar lacks pace and has had some pretty poor games against us (final game of first season back in PL stands out).

Doesn't hurt to have experienced players in the spine of the team, in my opinion. If Cuellar looks slow and cumbersome he'll soon find himself out of the team - can't imagine we'd offer him more than a one-year deal (possibly with an option for a second year). If it allows Gafaiti to go out on loan and get regular football in the lower leagues, it seems like a sensible signing to me. My only caveat is that it might drop Ryan Bennett further down the pecking order, and I think he's at the perfect age to nail down a regular place. I think he'd blossom in this division.

I remember the Villa fans singing his name, in between screaming for McLeish's head, as it was his final game. At the end he came over with signed shirts for the fans & spent ages signing autographs etc. Villa fans are notoriously hard to please & they seemed genuinely sad to see him go. I know he's too old/slow for the Prem but he may still be able to do a job in the Champs.

Experience counts for a lot in defence. Reading the play enables a slower player to move into the right area before a less experienced player, thus negating lack of pace.

I wasn't sure about Cuellar when I first heard the news mainly because he has looked poor every time I've actually seen him play.
One thing I have to remind myself is that we are in the Championship now and having thought about it he should be a great player at this level. We all know we need a good experienced CB and to get him on a Free is good business.

I'm warming to this potential signing, now that I think about it, and having read the reasoned posts above.
A defence sitting slightly deeper due to being a little slow, but possibly being better to anticipate the play, means less likely to get caught over the top, and gives us the space to attack quickly into when we gain possession in our own half.

My memory of him, and it may be clouded, is of a player comfortable on the ball.this is much needed as none of our central defenders, with the possible exception of R.Bennett, could be classified as this.

Happy with that, gives us a little experience at the back and a player who is comfortable with the ball at his feet. Also gives us more options, so can't complain.
