Yeah our end product today really let us down. I thought other than that it was actually a good performance. In spells we looked excellent, but just couldn't get that crucial goal. We had some great opportunities as well, yet neither Vrancic, Stiepermann or Murphy could take them. An undoubted positive though is yet again our defence played well and looked pretty comfortable, hence why we got another clean sheet.
Jerome I just don't think suits the way we play under Farke at all. He received the ball with his back to goal a lot today, when his forte is chasing long balls over the top. Josh had an absolute mare. He's arguably been our worst player in the last 2 league games before this one, and he didn't do much to stop that dip in form today. He had a glorious chance after Vrancic put him in behind the defence, where he either has to get a shot off or look to square it to Jerome, in the end he just panicked and did neither, just blasted the ball across the box nowhere near Jerome or the goal. As others have said as well, Watkins was pretty hit and miss as well. Having not watched the Sheffield United game or any of our cup games I have to say I don't think I've seen him have a good game for us yet.
Overall though I was relatively pleased with everyone else. Trybull was superb again, definitely deserved his man of the match. So many times Bristol City would make a pass and he'd just nip and get it before it reached the intended player, although at the same time it did also lead to him giving away a few fouls. Vrancic wasn't amazing, not near it in fact, but I was more impressed with him than I have been in previous games. Maybe the fact he was playing in a central role helped, but he seemed to have a presence on the pitch whereas in other games he just hasn't. Every good chance we had today came through him, which while he still looks a bit unwilling to get properly stuck in, is a promising sign. Stiepermann's run of great form at left back continued. Thought he was probably our best player after Trybull. The rest all had good games without being exceptional, though a special mention for Gunn, who made one very good save and held onto a couple of other shots well, when parrying them or spilling them could've been costly with Bristol City players lurking.
Have to say I was surprised to see Wildschut dropped. Though it was good to see Farke bring him on nice and early in the 2nd half. I thought Farke nailed the substitutions to be fair, which was a bit of an issue in the Burton game.
All in all I'm pretty content, though I do see this as two points dropped. I think at the moment Farke is making solidifying our defence the number one priority. I would hope over the next few games, maybe starting in our next home game against Hull, we'll see a side that's prepared to take more risks going forward, knowing that the defence behind them is a solid one.
