Josh Murphy will have a late fitness test on a sore heel. Kyle Lafferty is "sick" (lol make of that what you will ;) )

Hooper and Ofoe playing in development game tonight, Neil wants them both to get 90 minutes, but doesn't rule either out from tomorrow night!

I think this has all the makings of a tough game.

Charlton are unbeaten and have looked very solid defensively and I really like the look of Vetokele up front. They generally seem to play with one man up front and I suspect that they will set up to make themselves very hard to break down and hope to catch on the break.

We should win but it may require some patience and guile.

Will be interesting to see Rhoys Wiggins at left-back who was a Lambert signing that never made the first team with us before heading off to Bournemouth.

Loved the formation on Saturday when Murphy came on, so would give Wes a rest and start 442 with Redders and Murphy wide, with Howson and Tettey behind. Looks a winner to me.

I hope we revert back to 4231 tomorrow. Jerome on a wing is a small price to pay to have Wes in his rightful position. I think we'll need Wes on form to break down this back line.

As for Murphy, still feels like an impact sub to me. Hope I'm wrong though of course and he truly breaks into the starting 11 over the coming months.

Finally, do you guys think Murphy/Johnson/Tettey/Redmond is creative enough to be used from the start? I think I'd like Howson or maybe Vadis to fill one of those central positions for this formation in the future. Of course in a 4231 Howson should be an attacking midfielder.

I would make a couple of changes for this game. Whilst I would prefer us to play 4-2-3-1 I don't think we will, and I don't have any real problems with that as long as we don't play Wes on the wing. I personally would bring in Whittaker and E.Bennett for Martin and Hoolahan. The reason I would say Whittaker for Martin is because Martin seems to struggle against strong, powerful forwards/wingers. Whittaker seems to be better at dealing with them. Martin struggled against Clayton Donaldson last week against Birmingham, and the same with Zoko and Miller against Blackpool on Saturday. Charlton are likely to play with Franck Moussa down that side, and Vetokele up top. 2 big, powerful, quick players. And the reason I say Elliott Bennett, is because I don't think we have another natural winger that can play there. As Murphy doesn't seem to be ready to play there, Wes just isn't a winger, and we haven't seen McGrandles play yet. I'd keep Redmond on the right and stick Bennett on the left, as his delivery tends to be pretty good.

This'll definitely be a difficult game. Undefeated so far, and like many teams this season it's likely they will play 4-5-1 and try and nick a goal on the counter attack. I think it'll be a draw. Vetokele scoring first for them and then Cameron Jerome will score for us. As usual we'll improve in the second half, but it won't be enough.

even if murphy is fit he is still not quite ready to start - while direct it is clear he is still learning and for me our best use is to continue to use him as an impact sub.

I didnt like the 442/4222 with wes left either - so either go back to 4231 with wes central behind jerome (the better of our two strikers by some way) and play either grabban or lafferty left or go a true 442 with lafferty left.    Personally I would revert to 4231.

Defence is harder - it continues to look uncomfortable with none of the 4 defenders having a good game on sat - martin was much better going forward but poor at the back,  turner for him had a shocker and the turner hooiveld needs more time.   Even olsson is looking poor - but for this week stick with the same as last time.

ps  - although BJ was very off the pace in the first half on sat his form so far means i would continue to partner him with Tettey rather and bring howson back for BJ,   at least for now anyway.

The phrase 'don't fix what aint broke' comes to mind.  Yes Charlton are a much stronger opposition than Blackpool, and we won't create chances at will like in that second half, but i don't think our attack needs changing.

And I agree with Keiran, playing Jerome slightly out of position is worth the sacrifice for Wes to play central. And also Murphy is still an impact sub in my eyes. He couldn't keep up that blistering pace and energy for 90 minutes.

I would prefer a 4-2-3-1 in this one, and have been convinced by Din's very good argument above for Whits to start over Martin, so below is my preferred 11, much like everyone else's really: -

                   Ruddy

 Whits - Turner - Jos - Olsson

          Johnson - Tetty

Redders - Hoolahan - Jerome

                Grabban

I'm looking forward to Howson being back in the starting line up, but think this one might be too big a game to disrupt the flow of the team. Maybe a half time sub if Hoolahan isn't having the effect we hope!

I'd prefer a 4-2-3-1 with Wes, but Adams may want to give him a rest. At 32, it's hard for him to play twice a week now. Perhaps Howson instead? If it is a 4-4-2, I'd prefer Din's logic with Redmond and Bennett playing wide and switching over from time to time. Josh as impact sub if his heel has recovered.

Would really like to see Howson back in the starting, think he gives us more drive and moves the ball forward alot quicker. Dont really think you can take Tettey or Johnson out of the starting lineup. And if he comes in for Hoolahan then where does that leave the left hand side, would Jerome or Grabban have to move out there.

Think I disagree with most on this thread – I don't think Wes should start three games in a week, so I'd rest him for this one and go with:

Ruddy

Martin-Turner-Hooiveld-Olsson

Redmond-Tettey-Johnson-Murphy

Jerome-Grabban

Subs: Rudd, Whittaker, Miquel, Howson, E. Bennett, Hoolahan, Lafferty (or Loza if Lafferty isn't fit).

If Josh isn't fit to start, I guess Wes back in the centre of a 4-2-3-1, and Murphy to start on Saturday. I hear the 'impact sub' argument, but if Murphy starts and plays well it could be a real stepping stone in his career. We've got to trust the most talented youngsters if we're ever going to aspire to the 'Southampton model' of youth development, which for a club of our size (small in relative financial terms) would be a very good thing to aim towards.

Might have considered driving back to Norwich for that if I wasn't on a night shift tonight.

I saw it... my girlfriend might be interested in going. I sit in the N&P Upper too, so it might be that I come and sit with you, and she can sit with my old man. Either way, I'll let you know if I hear back in the affirmative.
