according to the Scottish Sun, we are after Celtic and Holland defender Virgil van Dijk, with an £8m bid reportedly on the way, I quite like the look of him to be honest, pretty solid at the back, a full international and pops up with a fair few goals too

Hard not to be impressed by that video. Reminds me of Tom Huddlestone. Similar physique and looks good on the ball. Free-kick was quality and the goal that follows it was awesome!. Whilst it says a lot about the quality of opposition in Scotland the attributes are still there. Looks strong, quick, accomplished on the ball, powerful shot on him. Could complement Bassong very well. That said, despite being rightfooted he seems to occupy the left centre-back birth. Choice? Or because his partner has to play on the right? Id be very enthusiastic about the prospect of Olsson-Bassong-Van Dijk-Yedlin. Though we would do well to get either of these in the face of a lot of competition.

Martin's role in the team would definitely be questioned. Your captain expects to play every week. If Russ is not first choice at CB or RB thats an issue

Think we have little chance of winning this battle

We can beat Sunderland to a player and the other thing was just one of their staff hyping him up..

If we really want this chap and Hooper is not in Neil's first team plans, it could be the edge we'd need to get ahead of other teams

If that was Celtic's demand then I think we'd look elsewhere.

Hooper isn't perfect but he'll play his part here next season.

Maybe we could send out van Dutchman the other way. He might score goals at the only good team in Scotland and he'd have the CL too.

I suggested that on the Celtic forum - could be a good move for both of them. And he already looks good in green and white hoops...

I think we should all be a bit wary of judging Dutch players on their YouTube highlights videos,  it has only disappointed us in the past.

I would still be excited by this signing though, he's very highly rated and has been linked to Arsenal in the past. We need a quality centre back and he's only 23.

I'd tip us to beat Sunderland to his signature too if that's the only competition, especially as their manager isn't committed for the long term.

I actually said a little while ago in the 'who should we sign' thread that I would love us to get for Van Dijk, so maybe it's just another lazy journalist :D

To be honest I would happily pay £8m for this guy. Quality centre back who would be a brilliant partner for Bassong. I wouldn't Hooper to go the other way as part of a deal though.

Can we compete with Southampton and Swansea at all for players now there is no Europe on offer? Or do we have to accept that they are way above us in the pyramid?

Southampton are clearly above both us and Swansea, just look at their record on buying players and selling them on to big clubs. If an ambitious young player wants a route to Man Utd / Chelsea / Liverpool then they would see Southampton as the ideal place wouldn't they?

Swansea are our equal, and in recent years we've already hijacked Swansea's moves for Ryan Bennett and Nathan Redmond. Its also one of the few clubs who are arguably less attractive geographically (well, to anybody who isn't Welsh)

Southampton emulated what we did coming from L1 to Prem. they do have bigger backers and attracted a higher profile manager.  But something isn't quite right there,  players do not want to leave in the numbers they have seen  ...

Swansea, the bubble did burst a little,  but has been patched up kept the managers job in-house which surprised me,  have a strict structure which seems to work for them, a chairman who will not go above what he says.  how I believe we got in a head of them for Bennett and Redmond ..(according to a swansea reporter I have chatted with)

I am not 100% we are any less attractive than those two,  I remember a few years ago, it looked like Worthington had got a little bit of a coup with signing Cattermole as a youngster (20),but he decided on wigan.   where we less attractive than wigan. ?    I hope not.

I think it is more to do with how teams are viewed in the prem ..will they face a relegation battle, ? will they be relegated for sure ?

Hard to tell  look at Bolton they looked safe established, I looked at Hull and thought they would knock on a little ...But then  Wigan hung around the bottom of the premier for years, like a turd that won't flush away, Sunderland have taken that mantle on
