The guy I know in the Villa back room team says they always used to hope Hooiveld was starting, and they would target him as a weak link in the defence. Said at Champs level he should be decent though, suits his game better.

He's not Prem class. That's why he's on loan to us.

It seems to me a very sensible signing.

It covers the absence of Bennett with a very experienced CD and along with Miguel increases the average height of the CDs  by an inch or two. I have felt that good as Martin is at CD he struggles a little for height in dealing with crosses. The two new signings should help reduce our slight vulnerability to high crosses. Hooiveld is also a big man, who should be able to resist pushing and shoving in the penalty area.

Finally, the Dutchman has scored some useful goals over the years.

And finally, finally, he is 31. He is on loan, and will be out of contract at the end of the season if, for any reason we wished to continue with his services.

At this level, a lot of the lower teams in the league will go for the ugly "smash the ball up to the big man" approach. We now have 5 absolute monsters at CB with Turner, Bennett, Cuellar, Miquel and Jos (and Seb too if he gets it together). Say we're 1-0 up at Rotherham (sorry Rotherham, not sure specifically they play that way, just a fair few champ teams do) and they are looking to apply the pressure, they'll not get far lumping it forward to Becchio's replacement.

Yes in the prem people like Aguero and Falcao and co will pick you apart if you take that approach a lot of the time but the reality is that we're not there now.

It's amazing how a weak area (CD) has suddenly gained strength and depth with 3 right-footed CBs (including Martin) and 3 left-footed CBs. Add to that Cuellar can also play RB and Miquel can play LB. Excellent.
