What the hell is up with the pinkun forum?

Hopefully it gets sorted.

The community on there is unrivalled.. this is a nice little alternative. But it is just that, little. Seems to be about 5 active posters!

If the Pink Un message board died it would be proper crap.

If it doesn't come back you'll find that this place will pick up. There's no substitute for a forum.

I think the Pinkun will keep the forum around because it drives traffic to main site, but the issue is I think they are running on some very old closed source proprietary software, they'll need new licenses and someone capable of performing the migration, it's not a simple process.

They may have to roll with a completely new forum from scratch, a big loss because there's posts going back 20 years, hopefully someone will try and save the arrdee posts at least.

I would suspect that decision will be tempered by how much, if any, money they want to spend. They are paying for someone's time to moderate a load of old blokes bearing out ten year old grudges, and the same argument over and over again. I would not be in the least bit surprised if they would be happy to just not bother any more. Obviously whatever is going on under the hood can't be fixed easily, the whole thing hasn't run properly for a long time now.

They did that a few years ago!

I think the software they use now is pretty common, I see similar features in other forums I’ve read but it obviously allows a fair bit of customisation of they look different. That’s not to say they haven’t left it to rot by not regularly upgrading it.

Morty presumably knows more about this sort of thing?

No, I didn't create Norwichtalk, I only moderate.

But, in my untrained opinion, even when they upgraded it, it looked clunky and already outdated. It is kind of embarrassing that our most used and populated football forum is so rubbish.

There are far less "grudges" played out on this forum (if any?). I wonder though if traffic increased, whether you'd simply recreate the conditions whereby the sheer volume of people might begin to fall out? I usually try and respond to a post, an opinion rather than my perception of the poster (which might be positive or negative - clearly we all have favourites for a whole host of reasons - sense of humour, sensible and measured people ...and so on). So I end up 'liking' posts sometimes of posters who I am glad would never get to meet (a polite way of saying it). I can like posts by people who I know have a very different political or world view to me. My view is "so what".

I never understand (properly) why folk spend such a lot of time and effort falling out and then becoming so fixed in their particular side (and then have an active dislike that persists). I assume people just like the conflict. An amusement maybe. The Pinkun forum suffers I think from a lot of entrenched views and I try and steer a course through it. Maybe that is what a community is really. After 20 years people struggle to get on. I mean, I like my neighbours but after a while it's nice not to see them!

The marvels of forums eh?

Another good one is the otbc.uk which a poster called Hogesar has set up as a direct response to the Pinkun problems and unreliability. It's decent as well and the level of exchange is polite and easy. Some posters are here from the PU and some go to the OTBC site and I tend to flit from one to the other (basically there are loads of good posters I have got to know). The one I don't really 'get' is the Wrath of the Barclay. It is occasionally funny and has a wide subject range and certainly worth looking at, but the format and layout is not as user friendly. Often posts are one word and you've just got to guess the context!

We are all Norwich though.

Edit... up where I am, it's ALAW... All Leeds Aren't We.

I won't allow it, is the simple answer. A few came over here from the pinkun, in the early days, trying to stir up nonsense, and I told them to stop it. By the time I was banned from the pinkun, I was sick and tired of all the same, recurring arguments, and I was determined that this place would not go the same way. Wrath of the Barclay is similar to the pinkun in so much that there is a core of people that have all been there a very long time, and I think also meet up.

I have only ever banned one person from here and that is Waveney Canary, because he became abusive, looks like I judged his character pretty well!

People can basically do whatever they like here, but I won't have anyone swinging their balls and acting like a bully.

No, I didn't create Norwichtalk,

I know you don't believe me, but I actually started NorwichTalk and passed it to the current owner (many, many, years ago now).

However I'm 99% sure I created it on Invision software and its now on Xenforo. At the time I couldn't afford the cloud hosted version of Xenforo, it is superior in my view. I approached the current owner as he had his own server space and a commercial license for the software, so it was comparatively pennies for him to run compared with me paying to cloud host via the software provider.

The software that the Pink'un is is opensource/free, all good until there is a vulnerability, then you are waiting for the goodwill of a community of volunteers to patch/fix it, as they are discovering now!

You do have to worry that Newsquest bigwigs might see a forum as being a huge inconvenience; they don't seem to have any other forums in their portfolio.
