Grabban Keep or Sell?

If we sell him we'll be rewarding him for his lack of respect as he'll be getting exactly what he wants, which sets a bad precedent.
If Bournemouth offer us enough money though what does it matter if he gets what he wants? As I said on the previous page, we can't just turn down good money for Grabban just to spite him. If Bournemouth offer us say £6m, which is more than what he's worth, than let's sell him and put the money towards a better replacement. If he doesn't want to be here as well what's the point of keeping him.

So does paying him good money to do nothing.

I guess we could refuse to allow him to join Bournemouth and then loan him to the Championship after the deadline, to teach him a lesson, but £5m+ is a lot of money to sacrifice just to make a political point which will change absolutely nothing about the nature of the modern game.

I don't give a monkeys if he gets what he wants. If we can get 6-8m for him we would be idiotic to turn it down so we can have the moral high ground.

I would have thought he'd only be allowed to go to Bournemouth if we feel we can buy better. We're not going to strengthen a direct rival and weaken ourselves, even if it means 7m in the bank now I imagine the club understand that it could mean a whole lot less income next season.

I don't think selling Grabban to Bournemouth would strengthen them to be honest. I'm sure we can buy better.

Get rid, you get behind your team, they pay your wages so if you sit on the bench on a Tuesday night in Yorkshire when it's raining you do it for the team. I think AN is not a man to be messed about and good luck to anyone who tries.

Sell If we can push Bournmouth to £7M plus another £1M if they stay up then buy Afobe for £12M which is what I think Wolves are after.

2 of the best young managers in the league do though.
If AN really thought he was that good, surely he'd be issuing a Wolvesesque response of 'Not for sale at any price' rather than dickering over an additional million or two???

He might well have been had the player not forced his hand. From what Neil has said about him over the time he's been here he clearly likes him as a player, even if he wasn't going to play every game this season.

But the Bournemouth bids were made before Grabban spat his dummy out, so it's clearly not a case of being forced, it's more a case of "we're happy to sell if the offer is right" and surely it's that simple?

I reckon if Liverpool turned up with 20-25mil for Redmond we'd sell, even though he's our best potential player and almost unstoppable when on top form, and that certainly wouldn't have anything to do with being forced either.

All players have a price, and in this case I think AN and the board know what they will accept, and it's certainly not going to be Afobe or Austin levels either...

After the first 2 bids Neil did say that he would't be interested in selling to one of his direct competitors. He also said that there are players that if a strong bid comes in and there's an opportunity to strengthen with that money then they'd think about it but there are some that they just wouldn't sell. If Grabban was happy to be here I think it would have taken a hell of a Bournemouth bid to take him.

The interview last night straight up sounded as if we were telling them to meet our price. Although I suppose you could say the first one was just us trying to big up our player so they come in with more.

A huge bid from a top 6 side is quite different to a bid from Bournemouth.

If they have bid £5.2m with 5 or so days left of the window, then I'm sure we can get them to £6m by the time the window closes.

Interestingly they are also said to be after Glenn Murray, so I wonder whether accepting their offer for Grabban would clear the way for us to sign him.

It would be a bit of a downer if they get Murray and we are stuck with an unhappy Grabban, so that's something we need to consider here I think.

A slightly more glamorous version of the same problem. Consider that Utd dont sell De Gea though and he rots on the bench until January. They'd have paid him a load of money not to play, they've ultimately not changed their position, they'll still end up having to sell him, and arguably they've weakened his value and their bargaining position.

I understand what Rio is saying, but ultimately will they achieve anything? Not to mention what something like that festering could do to team morale, something similar with Valdes is allegedly what put Pedro off from signing for them. Utd should just sell for the best price they can get. And so should we.

Can anyone think of any good examples where a club have kept an unhappy player and he's stormed back to be a huge success for them?

And Bassong, but both times the result of a managerial change.

I'd hope that Alex Neil is here for a few years, rather than a few months.
Agreed, new manager changes the whole dynamic rather than continues it. There probably are some examples but generally when things get to this stage there is an inevitability about the whole scenario and the idea things wont deteriorate is either a lack of practical foresight or delusion.

Grabban's situation doesnt seem as deep seated as the De Gea example and until Tuesday the idea he was unhappy would have been a surprise to most. Im not sure Grabban has burned his bridges here yet, but I find the idea of him becoming a roaring success here now quite unlikely. We dont want anything undermining team spirit and we dont want players who arent committed to the cause. Keeping him does more damage than letting him go I feel. Bournemouth are offering decent money. its not like they've made a derisory offer like Villa did when they were coveting Wes
