Norwich fans have been calling Ipswich 'binners' for years, although I can't remember it being used in the early 90's as kid (probably was though),can anybody shed any light on what it actually means and where it originated from? And how long we've been using it?
After the derby win I had a few glasses of wine (I'd relieved the fridge of its beer earlier in the week) and started singing "we beat the scum 1-0" around the house, my wife remarked "you call them scum just because they come from Ipswich?", to which I replied "no, I only call them scum if they support Ipswich". My missus isn't a football fan, and I can appreciate why she'd find that a bit extreme (she isn't from Norwich, she isn't supposed to understand). She did say "well what do they call you then?", to which I had to reply "well, scum".
So I told her I'd start calling them 'binners' in her presence, to avoid a conversation where I have to justify being a generally open-minded liberal man who doesn't really use insults or label people in any other context. Only, I don't even know what that actually means. Is there a story behind it?
