For me, today, Zak's waterside with my boys. I reckon a chilli burger will keep me warm this afternoon.

Ah, Zak's. Best burgers in the world, but parking at the Waterside is a nightmare.

Get the car defrosted for the supermarket run. back to find out if Fawa is up and running, a lump of whiskey in the glass, ready to relax. I do miss my pre-match stops in the Murderers and the Wherry though, are they still in action|?

The Murderers is, and is still very popular. Not sure I have ever been in the Wherry!

I don't mind it but since we found out the landlord supported that team down the road two of my mates flatly refuse to go in there! We used to often watch the half five game in there but they go to the Woolpack now instead and that's a bit shit so I tend to just go to The Rose instead!

There's a pub on Yarmouth road that's run by one of them and they use it as the away pub. I'll never give him my money, plenty of other pubs to visit

Genuine question, but is 'the owner is a binner' a valid reason for boycotting a pub, unless they're also a bit a twat in other ways?

I personally have more respect for someone who supports Ipswich, which is always going to be because it's their local team or through parental influence, than someone who chooses Man Utd or Liverpool simply because they were the best team when they were growing up.

The only pub I 'boycott' because the owner is a total bellend is Wetherspoons, unless I'm part of a large group and I get considerably outvoted.

In a surprise to absolutely no one, I love spoons.

Any pub that will sell me beer at half the price of everywhere else gets my vote.

A pub where you can go, before getting on the train for an awayday, and get a decent fry up with a pint thrown in for about a tenner, whats not to like? I don't give a shite who owns it, or what his politics are :D

It's basically turning the pub trade into a race to the bottom though. Deliberately trying to undercut independently owned pubs to the point where they can't survive against a massive chain with economy of scale and who treat staff notoriously terribly.

When it comes to food and drink, I always try to avoid any large chain unless I'm at an airport, motorway services or possibly a large retail park where there's little choice. The quality is lower because the produce is generally made off site and just warmed up or microwaved, and the service is worse as staff don't really care as it's not their business.

Even if it means spending fractionally more (and sometimes it doesn't actually cost any more) I always choose an independent pub, restaurant, cafe or takeaway unless there are no options in the immediate vicinity.

It's said that everywhere you spend your money, you voting for how you want the world to look. In terms of food and drink, I'd rather go somewhere that doesn't just offer minimum quality at low prices, treats their people badly and just makes a CEO even richer rather than putting my money into the local economy.

Rant over.

I don't disagree with at least some of that.

But cheap beer.

Yep if you can put money into independents you still have a high street (if enough do it). I'm not against Spoons' business plan because a market is a market. But it IS a conscious choice we can make so I'm applauding your policy.

A month ago we sat outside a Spoons (tables set out) with our dog but then we were asked to leave! So that's a first. They have a very strict no dogs policy. I'm guessing they don't want the hassle.

A feature is that their carpets are not changed that often! If at all. Even Macdonalds give their places an upgrade every few years.

I guess a lot depends on whether or not you are able to choose to pay more for your leisure activities. Some can't.

Not me like. For balance I also use a lot of other pubs too.

I use them all too, including Wetherspoons. I think having a consciousness of your choice is valid. Free coffee refills but it sometimes tastes shit (better and more expensive stuff is behind the counter....machine not a filter system that is possibly never cleaned out). WWIAFTM's "race to the bottom" point is a decent analogy.

Supermarkets have done the same, Amazon and so on. Amazingly successful business models but at a price. That's life. All you can try and do is buy local (like your milkman). Think this will go off topic but to add you can buy your clothes made in the UK from people who don't pay their workers minimum wage and in turn support local economies. I'm a believer in UK made stuff, where it's possible.

I agree, and will always buy British, or shop locally where possible. Have you seen the price of milk from a milkman though?

However, let me give you an example.

Some years ago I needed a cable for something, an HDMI or something like that, so I walked up the City and went to Tandy, where I saw one for something like £7:50. I stood in the shop and looked it up on Amazon and I could get it poked through my letterbox, for 3 quid cheaper, the next day.

I like to think I played my part in them going out of business not long after.
