Benno wasn't even on the bench for the Cardiff game. I really like him as he works his socks off and has a great attitude, and it'll be a shame if he's barely involved this season, especially after spending all of the last campaign out injured.

Most likely off to Brighton on a short term loan. Probably good move for him & us as he needs time on the pitch but isn't close to the first team at the moment.

Hope this isnt a prelude to him leaving. Good solid player, model pro and great attitude. Not really hit the heights we hoped he would, but still has potential I think. Signing Snodgrass really harmed his development and then of course the injury. Hopefully this will help him get back on track and he will come back to us a better player. Should be our rightback IMO

Yeah hopefully he won't leave following this loan spell, it'll be good for him though to get some games under his belt. Hopefully he can do that, hit a bit of form and come back in a months time and perhaps break into our first team.

I also hope that the loan is only to get him match-fit, as I'd hate to see him go.

Played 71 minutes. Neat and tidy enough, but Brighton look generally woeful going forward.

IMO, that has been Bennett's problem - raising his game to another level. I still wonder whether his best option might be as a wingback or even RB.

Looking increasingly likely that Benno will be in the squad as a right back if today's EDP is to be believed. It's obviously where the manager sees him.Good move if it comes off, saves money on a transfer in that position. Always liked him, seems like a good guy and has a good attitude. Really hope it works out.

I read that as ''we need more players in that position so we'll give it a go he's a good lad so he doesn't complain''.

Still highly doubt he'll make it as a Premier League right back. Maybe if we go down using him at right back he can play the position in the Championship.

A bit harsh KS.

When we signed him, Brighton supporters (there are a few of them down here) rated him as a full back when he filled in there and thought that could be his ultimate position. So would not be a new concept to him.

However that was division 1 and you may be right re the step up in what is required in the premiership. I would trust AN's judgement on this one, if he does not think it has a good chance of working I doubt that he would even try it, let alone go public on it.

I've always thought he looked good when playing at RB, although I still remember the quick, attacking winger (who could also play behind a front man) we initially signed from Brighton that somehow Hughton managed to drain the life from...

Well, many of us have been championing this for a while now. We get to see now if it will work  :)

I think the draining of life was more down to being injured all the time.  It's an old cliché but he hasn't looked the same since.

Obviously deserves another shot after a full preseason but I don't think he's good enough, to play winger or fullback. Would be nice if I was proven wrong but I think he'll be shipped out in January or next summer.

I dont think he's good enough to play winger either. His first season he was steady, but we felt there was more to come as he was coping well with stepping up two divisions. The signing of Snodgrass really harmed his development. Then he looked great in that opening game then got the injury. Its hard to know what he might have developed into without Snodgrass blocking his path and without the injury. But his improvement has levelled off and in truth he has probably gone backwards. I think he has no chance of displacing Redmond at right wing.

I don think he has the attacking attributes at this level required of a winger, but they are more than adequate for a fullback. Overlapping he will find himself regularly in his more accustomed position, so we should have no qualms about his attacking attributes in this role.

Examining his defensive qualities, what you have always had from Elliott is a high work rate, a very good positional sense and a good level of intelligence and awareness. He has shown on multiple occasions that his defensive awareness is far superior to players like Pilks and Redmond, who have tried to defend but dont seem to know what to do, how to do it or be aware of where they should be, who they should be marking or aware of the runs of attacking players - not so with Elliott. He is strong in the tackle and has significant pace compared to Whittaker or Martin.

Elliott could be our right-sided Olsson - and if the likes of Tettey are dropping to play centre-back when the fullbacks storm up the pitch as has been pointed out, I think Elliott could bring a lot to the team without weakening us defensively at all.

I think right-back is is only path into the first team, and I for one hope that he grabs the opportunity

I look forward to seeing him play there in the early rounds of the league cup.
