RE: The Software Upgrade

Hi guys,

Got fed up with messing around and have made the forum live in its current state.

I may go offline for a while later in the week to finish off, one of our dogs has been in the vets all day today and my eyes are going square so consider it a job half done.

I'm currently getting the logo finished off (the high res vector version forthcoming),want to make some changes to the thread/post pages which I think can be much more attractive (they feel a bit difficult to read at the moment, perhaps the change will just take a little while to get used to).

All other apps (Galleries etc) disabled for now.

I've also deleted all spam accounts and done a little general tidying up.

This software is still new to me, all I know is that it needed to be done because version 3.4 had some security issues and at some stage will no longer be supported. Have a play around and I'll try and answer any questions if I can.

There are two things I need to make you are of:

1). This upgrade seems to have disregarded 'display names', and is currently displaying 'usernames', you'll need to change your username in your profile if you want your old display name back.

2). I accidentally deleted the old 'Other Football' forum, and lost about 350 posts in the process. Apparently unrecoverable, so that's a bit of a bummer.

Initial feedback welcome.

Cheers!

Yes, that's the biggest 'pro' with upgrading, this site is now responsive so should work much better for smartphone & tablet users.

I think there is an option to have square avatars, I'll have a hunt for it when I next have a play around.

I'm happy to try out both and then put it to a poll, people can literally vote on the issue if they want  :)

Hmmm..... I just opened internet explorer.

I notice that the 'recent posts' sidebar is askew, what other problems are you having with IE out of interest?

The update had to happen, in 2016 support for the old version will cease (along with security updates).

But I will want to be ironing out issues like this because previously I'd just ignored them on the basis that the upgrade should fix most of them!

I've gone with square avatars for now, will see if there is an appetite for round avatars another time.

No matter how I tried I just couldn't reply to posts or cut and paste when using IE,  oh, and square avatars btw.

Just turned off the feature which merges posts when the same poster posts two replies in a row.

One annoying thing I've noticed is that there are no post numbers on the threads, It makes it easier when they are numbered because people can say "see post 12" or whatever.

People need to give me feedback on what they specifically don't like really, rather than just saying they don't like it, because some things may be within my control - but the backend is brand new to me, so I unless somebody asks me about a feature I won't think to look for settings.

A nice positive that I've just discovered is that you can simply drag images onto the post editor when you want to post an image (says 'drag files here').

Wiz, this was an issue that you had with the old version?

If so, is that working with the new version? Need to know the answer to that really mate, because I don't want to kick off with Invision about problems which don't currently exist.

I just logged on with IE11 and managed to copy and paste + reply & quote a thread with no issues on this new version?

Looks great, much more modern and professional-looking. The new logo is good too. I did prefer the way the recent threads on the right were displayed though, so it only displayed the thread once rather than for each post. With the new one it seems that if one thread got a lot of posts it would drown out all the others.

Small issue I know, but how do I upload a profile picture smaller than 50kb? Cheers

I would also prefer that, I'm hoping that somebody has or will be creating a plugin for that. The problem with this new software is that all old plugins need to be rewritten to work with this new version, so it is going to take a while for the third party devs to catch up. Having a look for a solution to this particular issue is top of the list.

Are you saying that you are trying to upload a photo and it is saying that your image must be under 50kb? That's probably a setting I can change from the back end. Or I can try and reduce the size of the image for you if you ping it to me in a PM (if it allows you to upload it!).

It looks as if all settings have reverted to default, as I've already changed a few things which I'd already when installing the older version.

Looks great, love the new logo!

New forum, matchday talk? Not so sure about that, but I guess if the sidebar is visible on mobile versions then folks should find it okay.

Oh and octagonal avatars please ;)
