Ideas for new forum icons?

I will soon be arranging for somebody to create us some new forum icons. In case you are wondering what those are, these are those:

The things which are faded when you don't have new posts/topics to read, and coloured when you do.

I have never been a big fan of those icons (default with the skin that I modded).

~~Can't quite put my finger on why~~ because the colour blue has no place on a Norwich City forum.

Just wondering whether anybody has any ideas - I was initially going to get canaries, but the club own the copyright to the badge and I'd like to avoid a situation whereas the club has any leverage whatsoever over an independent forum.

(e.g. get that completely non-libelous post off of your forum or we will cause you some trouble over those there canaries).

Which incidentally is why this place didn't get called canarieschat.com or something, because the club own the trademark 'canaries' which would be enforceable against anything football related.

So I was thinking about footballs in black and green. I'm not going to get individual icons for each section of the index (e.g. footballs for football boards, and other stuff for non-football, etc),so if I got footballs they would replace all of those ghastly blue things.

Footballs sound good, or any other suggestions?

But I do like the black and green footballs idea...

I've seen some forums where they have individual icons for each board, and it can look great.... problem then is that it then becomes a rather big job for a graphic designer and they will be looking for an hourly rate, and because this forum is already being subbed and currently has no income, and won't be self sufficient for a long time, I don't really want to give the graphic designer much more than a couple of beers for his time.

Especially as this place is still developing and I'm making it up as I go along, if 'Cricket' still only has 3 topics in six months time - then creating a cricket bat icon would have been a waste of time if I were to roll the forum into 'other sports', so perhaps that level of detail would be more feasible when this place is established and somewhere near self-sufficient.

I could even stick with the current speech bubble icons but get them made in an appropriate colour - just sick of the blue!

@browno - I've started making some icons (well, finding icons and making them match the green hex code in the site header).
