Remember when he got his first game for England and he almost scored an own goal within seconds of coming on? That's all I can really remember about him, that and the arguments about if he should be payed as a midfielder or not. Done nothing but bench warm since leaving us. Very much failed to live up to the potential he may have once had.

I was convinced he was heading for greatness, and that Everton was just a stepping stone.

Shows how much I know.

Damn, think he'd be a good signing for them and Binners seem the sort to be happy to pay the wages too.

Poor defender, relied on his athleticism to get out of trouble - found out a higher level. Good attitude, but lacks qua;it’s - not sure he would improve the binners.

Bench warming? He started 86 games for Everton!

I think he was always a bit limited to reach the very top, but is, or would be, a decent option for a team in the bottom half of the Premier League.

My main takeaway from this is that I'm really disappointed it hasn't worked out for him Atalanta. They really overloaded on centre backs this season and Godfrey seems to have always been bottom of the pile, and injuries have prevented him from climbing the pecking order.

I always thought he had the athleticism but just needed a bit of polishing, and that he could kick on once playing at a higher level. But I do remember his inconsistencies before he left us.

I always thought Webber did amazing work getting the money we did for Godfrey, Lewis and Aarons. They were all quick and good on the ball but I never saw any of them as particularly strong defenders, by which I mean being able to win the ball back and snuff out opponents attacks.
Even Farkes second promotion where we didn’t concede many, that was more due to the fact we’d keep the ball for hours on end rather than being defensively solid. On the rare occasions the opposition had the ball they tended to waltz straight through and we’d be reliant on Kruls heroics (who had a blinding season from memory).
I’m actually enjoying watching Duffy, who is a much more old school defender in that he exists solely to keep the ball out of the net, however it needs to be done.

I think it has been a long time since clubs took our players for poor fees. Lewis and Aarons were both closer to being the finished article than Godfrey for sure. I think we have decent depth right now at CB, probably better than we have had for years. I would not be unhappy if we bought Doyle.

Me neither, but Man City aren't selling him for less than £10m. He's homegrown, only 21, and has established himself as a top Championship defender over the last two three years; he was a regular starter for the title winners last season, after all.

Man City's net spend over the last five years or so is surprisingly low because of the amount of youngsters they've sold for £10-15m. If I were to guess where Doyle plays next season, it'd be with a newly-promoted Premier League side like Leeds, Burnley or Sheffield United having been bought for £10-12m.

I'm not angry Ben. I'm just really disappointed. May you score many own goals and concede all the penalties...

Cannot see who he would replace in the binners back eight

I'm not hugely arsed, its just a job, he isn't a fan. I would probably be more bothered if he was still decent, but he isn't the player he used to be, and his career seems very much on a downward trajectory.

I used to watch him when he played for Everton and wanted him to well (as I tend to for any ex player who has put in a stint for us). I rated him when with us but in the last 6 months at Everton I formed the opinion that he was actually a very limited defender. He would ball watch and not mark space or even read the game that well. He used his pace to try and compromise. Everton fans came to not rate him and I could see why. I think he will continue to be found out in the Prem. I'm unsure too what his best position is. Somehow for me he would be better in midfield because he can't defend that well.

Can't even now say he is a young player because at his age he is approaching his prime.

Still disappointed any former Norwich player goes to them. Always will feel like that. A bit of a red line really but as you say it's a job and someone came in for him. Hope they put him in defence.

So Adeyemi, Marshall, Lambert, Gibson are the ones I can remember going south.

Adeyemi barely played for them. Sadly his body wasn't up to playing football. He always seemed to have the potential.

We'll see with Gibson. I have this nagging feeling he'll do well.

I don't wish them any bad feelings. It's a short career. They've gotta earn a living somewhere.

Lambert I knew was a drunk twat before he went there anyway!

Marshall. Less said about him the better. Was a half decent keeper when he made reflex saves but anything relying on his judgement was abysmal and as for his kicking... Remember him coming back to Carrow Road for I think villa in a cup game and him being a cunt too.
